we trespass in late July, the broken moped that Corey Sargent dragged
to Isaiah’s lawn before the new owners in ‘96, and the porch
where Seth put the walkie talkie in my hand before watching
Tara’s tube top while we fought about religion like thugs, and those
stolen steaks in James's pants that he burned for the tattoo artist
responsible for my early obsession wearing drag, and how our dads
watched from the grass and realized they were painters, each of them
while kind of falling in love, and from Nanny’s kitchen where I lost the bet
about eating raw flour, her husband letting the bull chase his red jumpsuit
before threatening the cashier at Meat Land for wholesale condiments,
a deal, and this all-garden tumble through the map of Frederick County
on Russell’s picnic blanket, the “Surf’s Up Dad” graffiti near the mirror
we couldn’t hang on the wall, and pretending that gravity made TV operas
dutifully slow and warm enough to hook our chins. here I tested motherly love
by waiting for eons in a low candle; love me not among the gnome kitsch,
though we bring a few home and then you reach me, bashful like a toy.
